The Holy Grail... Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)


In the last post I mentioned that Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is the best option for curing PCOS.
However it just does not cure PCOS, it has many benefits.

After feeling the benefits of this drink, I made it mission to find most of its benefits and much to my surprise they are so many.

Before I list down the benefits lets talk about few things:

Which ACV should be bought?
Always buy Raw, Unfiltered & Unpasteurised ACV with the mother in it. With mother it means the little muddy thing that settles in the bottom of the bottle. It looks kind of yellow in colour. Dont buy the transparent ones that we get in food store, they wont help you. 
In India I couldn't find any store that sells ACV, hence I always buy it online. There are many online sellers which sell them, choose the one you want. I prefer Bragg ACV, which is considered best. 

How to consume ACV?
Shake well before use
ACV as name suggests is vinegar and has around 5% acidity level. Plus the pungent odour that it has makes it difficult to drink. (People who are alcohol consumers find this relatively easier)

For the consumption, drink it with water, take 1 tbsp of ACV, dilute it in water and drink. It is not recommended to drink it without water, it will burn like hell.
It is also not advised to add any contents that are acidic in nature like soft drinks, lemon etc. Given that ACV is already acidic, it makes it rather more difficult.
Also, it is strongly recommended to drink it with straw because constant use of ACV can slowly dissolve enamel in your teeth. Hence I swallow it directly

For odour, you get used to the smell in sometime, once you start drinking it eventually you start liking it. (For starter, you can pinch your nose for few seconds ;))

When to drink ACV?
Preferred time is in the morning and 30 minutes before meals. ACV aids digestion hence it is well suited time.
To begin with you should start with once per day and after your body is used to it, you can drink it multiple times. I have been drinking it twice daily and it helped me.

Now lets move on the benefits of ACV... below I have mentioned 40 different benefits of ACV. And I am pretty sure there will be many more.

PCOS aka Polycystic Ovary Syndrome


PCOS or PCOD is very common these days. Many girls/women struggle with this issue and unfortunately most don't even realise what is it.  

Most common symptoms of PCOS are 
1. Inconsistent or no periods
2. Unable to fall pregnant
3. Weird pains in abdominal or pelvis area
4. Weight gains (usually unexplained)
5.  Facial hair, acne etc

If you are suffering from most of the above symptoms then most likely you have PCOS. And much to your distress there is no known cure for PCOS in medical history. However there are ways through which you can not just control it but also in time get rid of it... Just like most women i too am a victim of this issue and after so much research i am improving and now have decided to share it with the world. 

In this section of my blog we are going to talk and discuss how to defeat the monster called PCOS... but before we get into the solution lets talk about what causes it. 

It is very important to note that PCOS is not a disease that is caused by any virus or some infection, instead it is a situation that develops in your body due to stress and/or unhealthy lifestyle. One might argue that it has nothing to with lifestyle but i beg to differ because statistically PCOS was rare when we led much better life. 

PCOS happens when the hormones in your body gets imbalanced. The 2 hormones in question are called LH and FSH. You ideally don't need so much detail but its good to know when your doctor asks you to get a blood test and  you don't know how to read them (well its valid for people like me who are so curious that they cant even wait for doctor to take a look)

So to explain how to interpret the results. Usually LH should be less than FSH (even if they are in normal range). If your LH is greater than FSH it means you have PCOS condition. When i tested myself 1st time it was double which means severe PCOS, but after 6 months of my own herbal treatment (western medicines didn't help me ) my LH was only 1.5 times (and going downwards), my doctor was surprised too...  

Now lets talk why your hormones are imbalanced? Well you didn't do anything intentionally so what went wrong. The answer my dear is simple - Stress. 
Stress can reveal itself in many ways like sleep deprivation, lack of hunger or excessive hunger, temperament, restlessness etc. any and all of these not just have visible effect on you but all these also silently affect your fertility and reproduction cycle. 

Even if you had bad childhood with nightmarish experience or very strict parents or guardians you can have this issue, so if you want to know why, keep quiet and think back and evaluate all reasons and find the source. Once you know the source you can take it forward towards curing it...

If you are the girl suffering or partner or friend of the girl suffering, let me assure you one thing... If you are very very lucky it can go away by its own, but unfortunately if you are like most of us then now is the time to focus on it....

PCOS: Problems and Solutions...


In my last post we discussed what is PCOS and what are the few problems that it can cause, i.e..
1. Inconsistent or no periods 
2. Inability to fall pregnant
3. Weird pains in abdominal or pelvis area
4. Weight gains (usually unexplained)
5. Facial hair etc...
But you should also know that the problems because of PCOS don't just end here... you can also have either or many of below:
  • Inability to ovulate (reason why you can't fall pregnant);
  • glucose intolerance (which is one of the major issues that PCOS can give and if not treated can result in diabetes); 
  • Severe dandruff; 
  • Thinning hair or bald patch on scalp; 
  • Facial/body hair; 
  • Oily skin; 
  • Acne or skin tags; 
  • Black patches on skin around neck, face, elbows, fingers etc;
  • Depression etc.
My aim here is not to scare you but just to inform you that if you are suffering from either of them and have PCOS then you should know the reason. And given your circumstances you should understand how soon you need to take steps to get this demon cured...
For me it was most of the above and worse was intolerable and blinding pains in right and left pelvis area. It was these pains that forced me to take necessary actions. 

Now I am not going to dwell more on why and how of this issue because I am sure all of us must have Google about it. Lets talk about what we can do.

Every doctor you will talk to will ask you to control your weight (PCOS has dramatic effect on weight gains, hence I am assuming but if you have not gained weight you are a one lucky girl!).
Weight control is very important because even if we lose 5% of existing weight it has serious positive impact but getting rid of that 5% is not that easy.
Doctors/Dieticians will ask you to go on diet, leave crabs etc. For short term it is good because when we do that we do lose weight but we cant live on diet and no-carbs forever and the moment we start again the weight doubles up. Also the hormone imbalance (like discussed in last post) in our body doesn't allow us to lose weight so easily. Hence the harder you will try the more disappointed and heart-broken you will be. Instead I would suggest doing following:
  • As 1st step get yourself checked for glucose intolerance. If you are glucose intolerant then immediately you need to work on that. The delay you make in getting this cured, the harder it will be and dangerous it will be for your body. I shall discuss this in upcoming posts...
  • Exercise at least 45 mins - 1 hour every day. You don't need to do any extensive workout, simple walk is good enough if it gets your heart pumping
  • Adopt yoga in your life. You need to gather that yoga doesn't mean doing only breathing exercise, it means a lot of movements. Start with basic steps and trust me the change you will notice in your body will be so refreshing that you will not want to leave it
  • Make sure you do pelvis exercise to keep your menstrual cycle regular. There are many pelvis exercises, even cycling, running are fine but personally I prefer butterfly exercise.
    • It is: sit straight with legs stretched. Then slowly fold your knees so that both your heels and toes are touching each other. Hold your toes in one hand and push them towards your body as much as you can and swing your knees up and down.
    • Start with 5 reps of 10 swings each, it will pain in initial days but in few days you will see benefits. Increase this gradually
    • It is also very good exercise if you have period pains
  • Eat everything but in control and small portions and at gap of 3-4 hours. If possible skip dinner and have a  glass of milk or protein shake or salad etc. If you cant skip dinner then make sure you dont go to bed for next 2 hours
  • Load up on vitamins like calcium, E, Magnesium, Omega3 etc.
  • And finally add 2 things in your diet:
    • Raw & Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (aka ACV)
    • Green tea
ACV or Apple Cider Vinegar is like holy-grail to me (or say Raam-Baand Ilaaz) that has truly helped me in overcoming this issue. Where I was suffering with severe PCOS, not able to lose weight etc. now I can feel I am getting better...

Green tea is another thing which is helping me lose fat...
